The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) Programs offer free tax help for taxpayers who qualify. Trained community volunteers may help with special credits, such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly. In addition to free tax return preparation assistance, most sites also offer free electronic filing (e-filing). Individuals taking advantage of the e-file program will receive their refunds in half the time compared to returns filed on paper – even faster if when tax refunds are deposited directly into one’s bank account. The Community Services Block Grant provides direct services to an excess of 900 families and individuals and leveraged services to more than 11,800 families and individuals in Chesterfield and Marlboro Counties annually. CSBG provides direct services through the Job Promotion, Youth Leadership, General Emergency Assistance, Community Food and Nutrition and the CSBG Energy Support Programs. The Job Promotion Program provides financial assistance for child care to low-income households to assist them in obtaining and/or maintaining employment, to attend school or college, or to participate in job training programs.
